It's All About You......Until It's Not
It’s all about you
When discussing an approach to auditioning I said this to a student recently.
“It’s all about you, then it’s nothing to do with you”
Write that down so you remember it and can glance at it before your auditions and now let me explain what I mean:
When you’re preparing for an audition, find every opportunity possible to bring yourself into the material. Your voice, your point of view, your sense of humor, your uniqueness, your experience, your trauma, your LIFE! Then when you step into the audition, know and trust that you deserve to be in that room. You deserve to occupy that space and their time and demand their attention because THEY deserve to get to know you and see you in the material. It’s the only thing that you have over every other person auditioning.
The audition happens.
Then, once you step out of that room (or turn the camera off with a self tape), you must remind yourself that it now has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. You have no control over whether you book the job or not.
In the audition room it’s not a question of your ‘voice, point of view, sense of humor, uniqueness, experience, trauma and life’ being good or bad or indifferent, it’s literally just whether you fit a puzzle or not, which you can’t predict and neither can they until they’ve seen all of their options.
So give them the option of YOU! You, you, you, you, you!
Are you courageous enough for that or is it more convenient to hide behind “trying to give them what they want”?
It’s vulnerable but I repeat this because it’s important….it's the only thing that you have over every other person auditioning. And even more importantly, if you DO get cast, you’ll have so much more freedom and confidence in doing the job, because you know that what they picked was YOU!
Keep up the great work
Mark
