You gotta get it done.

 You gotta get it done

Why aren’t you auditioning enough?

Don’t read that as a shameful criticism (which I imagine most people would).

Focus on the word why! Why aren’t you auditioning enough?

If you ARE happy with the amount of auditions, this issue of the Blog is not for you.

The culture in society today, particularly through social media, is to very often make you feel ‘less than’. You’re not doing enough. You’re not traveling enough. You’re not working enough. You’re not socializing enough. You’re not posting enough….. aka YOU ARE NOT ENOUGH!

So listen to me carefully. I’m not judging you. I’m asking you, WHY are you not auditioning?  And you should search hard for the answer to that question.

I am pretty sure it is something much deeper and more personal to you than “there’s just not enough work out there”. That is true but it’s ALWAYS been true and always will be and I believe we should not accept it and no longer allow ourselves to have that in our back pockets as an excuse.

There are auditions happening ALL THE TIME. Why aren’t you participating?

You have to practice the craft of auditioning if you want to get better at it.

Let’s be realistic, statistically you are not going to book the vast majority of things you audition for. If you wait to only audition for the things you WANT and nothing else, the stakes, in my opinion, will be too high for you to show them your best work.

Audition for the stuff you’re not bothered about booking so that you can PRACTICE your audition technique. If you DO book the job, why not do it? All experiences are worth having generally speaking.

One caveat is this: You should NOT audition for things you definitely do NOT want to do because that is disrespecting the casting director and creative team and their time.

Ultimately, you’ve got to show up for yourself and let people know you exist as an option. Now that you’ve read this, ask yourself some questions. Try to better understand your relationship to auditioning and then, trust that no-one knows you better than yourself. You deserve to feel confident in whatever decisions you make.

Keep up the great work.

Mark
